31 Days of Walking Foot Quilting

Monday, October 1, 2012
This morning I woke up and on a whim decided to join The Nester in the "31 days" series. This is an idea that has been rolling around in my head for over a year now. I think the thought of blogging for 31 straight days about the same topic kinda scared me. So I pulled out a piece of paper and numbered it from 1-31. That was a looong blank list, but then I started jotting down ideas and doodling quilting ideas and I ended up with more than 31 ideas/topics (some of which could be explored further.) I'm thinking that Sundays will more than likely feature a picture of a quilt for inspiration. All the other days will feature instruction and design ideas.

My hope during this 31 day series is to empower you to finish your own quilt tops. If "free motion" quilting scares you, then it's time to become friends with your walking foot. I want to show you that you can make beautiful quilting designs without having to send your quilt out to be long-arm machine quilted. Yes! I (a machine quilter) am encouraging you to do your own quilting!!! I'll still be here if you want me to quilt for ya though. Feel free to grab a button and post it on your blog. Don't forget to post your pictures on the Petit Design Co. Flickr group too.

A little disclaimer: All of the designs featured in the 31 days post were thought up by me on one afternoon. I sat down with a pen and paper and drew out over 40 designs. As is often the case in quilting, the odds are that someone else has also had the same idea, but arrived at it or done differently. After I write the weekly posts, I sit down and search Flickr, Pinterest, and Google to see if i can find any quilts using similar designs/concepts that I have shared. The quilts I find are featured on the Sunday Inspiration posts and link back to their original source. I did not browse the internet and steal designs/ideas from others to pass off as my own.

I am in the frantic end of quilting a quilt for a show on Saturday! Mixing free motion with walking foot. Cannot wait to see your hints. One thing I used last nightmare, was the left, right, diagonal up, diagonal down stitches.
These are on my Babylocl Elageo, so not everyone would have them. It helped me outline a star block in the ditch without having to rotate my fairly big quilt. I did have to take the walking foot off though for the left, right and diagonal stitching. But so far so good. Mary

I'm looking forward to this. If you get a chance and it fits in your schedule, I am interested in what in the world are registration marks.

I've wanted to quilt for a hundred years but fear of not being perfect enough kept me away. I'm still fairly new at it but am addicted to it. Loved your blog! It clarified many things and gave me the confidence to be bolder and try your finishing tips as well as creating some of my own. Thanks for sharing your time and talent with all of us! ~Diana~

I got your link from The Quilting Board. You have given me the courage to buy a walking foot and to learn to use it. I'm making my very 1st quilt and just have my trusty old clothes sewing machine & don't want to pay a lot of money for a machine I wont be able to use for a while due to learning all about how it works. The closer I am to finishing my top the more nervous I was becoming at the thought of actually doing the sandwich & then the top stitching. Your instructions have given me the confidence boost I needed, Thank You sew very much!

I just found this blog on walking foot quilting. Your instructions are so clear and easy to follow. They also take the intimidation away from fmq for me. Thanks for sharing these designs with me.

This is a WONDERFUL reference! I just got a Walking Foot, and will be using this for practice.

(Just an aside, have you considered changing the title font color to something a little darker than the pale yellow? It's nearly impossible to read without highlighting the text with the cursor :) )

So glad I found this as I am new to machine quilting. I love the idea of free motion quilting and have tried it but am not satisfied with the results. Your designs with the walking foot has more structure and offer a neater appearance. This I really like!!

Thank you so much for this! I am a new quilter, and I want to learn FMQ one day. I don't want to pay long arm quilter all the time, but I also don't want to be limited to straight line quilting. Until then I think I can learn to utilize my Walking Foot so much more! I can't wait to read all 31 days!

I have my walking foot on my Janome 9700, use it for regular sewing, piecing, have done 2 Cathedral window qullts using it. Just take your time, and you can manage the slow curves of the windows. I machine quilt all of the quilts I make, plus table runners and placemats. The walking foot makes piecing so easy. No need to pin.

I just came across this page today. Thank you so much! You are a sweetheart for sharing this! I needed this inspiration for doing my own quilts. I loved the curved crosshatching the most but I could see myself using all these.

I just want to thank you for these posts. I know this is a 5year old post, but I found it on Pinterest when I searched Straight Line Quilting. I am fairly new to quilting, not yet ready for free-motion quilting, but looking for creative straight line quilting ideas. You put many patterns, ideas and tips all in one place. I am super appreciative because this kind of info is difficult to find. I will be doing a lot of practicing. I also appreciate your approach, which is "there is no one right way" and not so fussy about drawing lines/using painters tape on the quilt, etc. I am way too impatient for all that...I just need to get stitching!!! As always, I remain ever grateful to all the wonderful bloggers and YouTubers like yourself who document themselves teaching us how to do shit. Thank you!!!!! Cindy Boxer

I love this, but I have one burning question, where do I start on a quilt top? Do I need to start in the center? I have done some in the ditch quilting, but did not use the 'arm' for my walking foot, and I agree the free motion thing, scares me to death. I am dying to get home to look at my machine and see if I have this 'arm' already.

I just came across your 31 Days of Walking Foot on Pinterest. I'm very excited to do this. Many of my quilts I'd like to quilt at home but I just can't master free motion but I use my walking foot for small projects and would like to expand. Thank you for 31 Days of Walking Foot.
